Developer Services Sewerage Services Adoption of Proposed Sewerage

If you are building a new sewer or lateral drain, which is intended to connect to one of our public sewers, you must first enter into an adoption agreement with Welsh Water. It is essential that you enter into this adoption agreement before you begin any construction work.

Why do I need an Adoption Agreement?

The Water Industry Act sets out the legislation which regulates new sewer connections. The Act does not allow any new connections to a public sewer without an adoption agreement in place. This is to ensure that arrangements for future maintenance of the sewer are established.

A few things to remember before you make your application:

  • Sewer adoption agreements cannot be entered into once the sewers and lateral drains have been installed. An agreement must be in place before the construction of the sewer or lateral drain begins.
  • Foul sewers must comply with the mandatory standard set out in The Welsh Ministers Standards for Gravity Sewers and Lateral Drains.
  • Adoptable surface water sewers and lateral drains should comply with the standards set out within the Design Guide ‘Sewers for Adoption 7th Edition'.
  • If you do not have an adoption agreement, you will not be allowed to connect to the public sewer.
